Dam, Thats Big. And the Grand Canyon.

A quick hop skip and jump from the man made playground of Las Vegas is the man made wonder of the world that is the Hoover Dam. Leaving Vegas in the early evening it was an easy, no brainer detour to take this in during the relative cool of dusk. The day had been so hot in Vegas that whilst we sweated out the previous evening by the pool, so some of the contents in the car quite literally melted. We lost some candle souvenirs and Dione’s laptop desk that we had foolishly left on the parcel shelf.

The Hoover Dam is, well it is just as vast as you can imagine. These days there is a bridge that was erected over about 10 years where you can walk and look over, if you have a head for heights that is. If you don’t, this is NOT the place for you.

Then on from here to the town or Laughlin. As Dione has previously eluded this is a town you can and should skip over. And I will by simply saying that is a state line Nevada Casino town that attracts exactly what State line Casino towns do. It might be worse than Reno if it was not for the River and relative proximity to lakes for boating. Although Reno is atleast close to Lake Tahoe, so I am still going to Reno if I am forced to one of them. Which I hope never to be again. The highlight for us was our first and only In and Out burger of the trip, so enough of that and on to the Grand Canyon.

This was my third visit to the big hole but Dione’s first. Getting there was an unexpected benefit of our change of plan – more of that later. It did require something of a detour to get to the South Rim, the North would have been a lessor drive from Vegas but my research indicated the South was the more rewarding. So we left Laughlin in the morning with some fair distance to cover in order to reach our evening stop in Kanub.

The Canyon did not disappoint, even a third time it still represents the wonder that a Wonder of the World should. Below are some of the photo and video from here. The images do look hazy and I believe that is representative of the the Canyon’s atmosphere on a clear day without much wind, as this was.
